The celebration of Yolo County Black History Month continues throughout February with a month-long series of events and activities designed to engage, educate, and inspire the community. Below are exciting ways you can engage with Black history as we approach the end of the month.
For more details, visit our Facebook page: Yolo County Black History Month or check out additional information at ycoe.org/blackhistory. For questions or more information, feel free to email Sandy Holman at info@cultureco-op.com.
From February 5 to 28, five quilt displays will be set up across Yolo County, each showcasing a collection of quilts by Khristel Johnson, a retired educator and master quilter. View this handout with all five locations.
We invite you to participate in an interactive activity by completing a quilt display passport by March 3 to enter a prize drawing. You can pick up a passport at any Yolo County Library branch or the Yolo County Office of Education in Woodland. Passports are also available for download online. Materials Needed:
Submission Details: Completed quilt squares must be submitted to any Yolo County Library branch or the Yolo County Office of Education by March 3. Classrooms and student groups are highly encouraged to participate. Please note that quilt squares will not be returned.
This year’s theme is “Stitching Together Stories: Celebrating Black History through Quilts, Education, and Engagement.” It highlights how quilts have preserved cultural heritage, told powerful stories, and sparked important conversations. Throughout Black History Month, we celebrate the intersection of art, education, and community engagement to deepen our understanding of Black history.
