SUMMARY:UC Davis |  Book Project: Viewing and Discussion of Nadine Burke Harris' TED Talk
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Campus Community Book Project (DEI | OCCR) \nNadine Burke Harris is a pediatrician and the author of The Deepest Well: Healing the Long-Term Effects of Childhood Trauma and Adversity. Her 2014 TED Talk “explains that the repeated stress of abuse\, neglect and parents struggling with mental health or substance abuse issues has real\, tangible effects on the development of the brain. This unfolds across a lifetime\, to the point where those who’ve experienced high levels of trauma are at triple the risk for heart disease and lung cancer. [It’s an] impassioned plea for pediatric medicine to confront the prevention and treatment of trauma\, head-on.” \nKarma Waltonen\, Continuing Lecturer in the University Writing Program\, will lead a discussion on the impacts of childhood trauma\, and we will consider societal changes to address them. \nIn 2024-2025\, the UC Davis Campus Community Book Project will be reading Weathering: The Extraordinary Stress of Ordinary Life in an Unjust Society by Arline Geronimus and will feature a year-long program on the theme of health equity and justice. Arline Geronimus is a Professor in the School of Public Health and Research Professor in the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan\, where she also is affiliated with the Center for Research on Ethnicity\, Culture and Health. She is an elected member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies of Science. Fusing science and social justice\, Dr. Geronimus’ scholarship explores the ways in which systemic injustice erodes the health of marginalized people. Until now\, there has been little discussion about the insidious effects of social injustice on the body. Weathering shifts the paradigm\, shining a light on the topic and offering a roadmap for hope.

SUMMARY:UC Davis | The Aoki Center and HSI Speaker Series: Yianella Blanco
DESCRIPTION:The Aoki Center and UC Davis Hispanic Serving Institution Speaker Series Presents Professor Yianella Blanco\, UC Davis School of Education \n\nDr. Yianella Blanco is an assistant professor in the School of Education. Her research focuses on the teaching and learning of Latinx histories and experiences in K-12 schools\, especially those of Central America(ns). She graduated from Teachers College\, Columbia University in 2022 with a PhD in Social Studies education. Prior to that\, she worked as a high school social studies and special education teacher in New York City. Her work with young people inspires her research and sustains her spirit as she continues to search for liberatory and humanizing educational practices. \nThis talk is drawn from a larger qualitative research study with Central American-American educators\, during which they shared their own testimonios and collectively read the testimonios written by Central American migrant youth to imagine how we might use testimonios in our teaching practice. Our research is grounded in LatCrit theory\, and builds upon testimonio research that has uplifted the histories and experiences of Latinx youth. We add to this research by putting it in conversation with healing-centered pedagogy (Ginwright\, 2015; 2018). Ultimately\, we argue that testimonios can aid in dismantling oppressive narratives and build new ones focused on Latinx youths’ joy\, strengths\, and successes. DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Campus Community Book Project (DEI | OCCR) \nThe Interprofessional Book Club at UC Davis Health returns for the 2024-2025 Campus Community Book Project. Jann Murray-García\, clinical professor emerita\, leads this year’s sessions. Everyone is welcome — students\, faculty\, staff and community members. This event is virtual. For more information click here. \nArline T. Geronimus coined the term “weathering” to describe the effects of systemic oppression—including racism and classism—on the body. In “Weathering: The Extraordinary Stress of Ordinary Life in an Unjust Society\,” based on more than 30 years of research\, she argues that health and aging have more to do with how society treats us than how well we take care of ourselves. She explains what happens to human bodies as they attempt to withstand and overcome societal challenges and details how that ravages our health. And she proposes solutions. DESCRIPTION:Davis comedian and University Writing Program continuing lecturer\, Karma Waltonen\, performs her stand-up routine about life as a chronic pain patient.\nIn 2024-2025\, the UC Davis Campus Community Book Project will be reading “Weathering: The Extraordinary Stress of Ordinary Life in an Unjust Society” by Arline Geronimus and will feature a year-long program on the theme of health equity and justice. Arline Geronimus is a professor in the School of Public Health and a research professor at the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan\, where she also is affiliated with the Center for Research on Ethnicity\, Culture and Health. She is an elected member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies of Science. Fusing science and social justice\, Dr. Geronimus’ scholarship explores how systemic injustice erodes the health of marginalized people. Until now\, there has been little discussion about the insidious effects of social injustice on the body. “Weathering” shifts the paradigm\, shining a light on the topic and offering a roadmap for hope.
