SUMMARY:From Photo Repatriation to Totem Pole Rematriation
DESCRIPTION:From Photo Repatriation to Totem Pole Rematriation: Developing the Work of Tsimshian Photographer B.A. Haldane through Community-Based Research\n⭐️ Presented by the Department of Native American Studies and Gorman Museum of Native American Art\n⭐️ Sponsored by the College of Letters and Science\, Department of Native American Studies and Mellon Foundation \nThis discussion highlights the main developments of a twenty-year research project focused on the images produced by 19th Century photographer B.A. (Benjamin Alfred) Haldane. B.A. (1874-1941) was proud member of the Laxgyibuu (wolf clan) of the Tsimshian Nation of Metlakatla\, Alaska. One of the earliest professional Indigenous photographers in North America\, he opened a Victorian-style studio in Metlakatla in 1899 where he created portraits of Tsimshian\, Tlingit\, and Haida people and families. A versatile and gifted musician and band director\, he also travelled to their communities throughout Southeast Alaska and Northern British Columbia to take photographs and teach music. Few of his photographs survived in Metlakatla as they were collected and incorporated into the host of anonymously produced images in archives across North America. Starting in 2004\, my community-based research of B.A.’s photography reattributed his work and repatriated to his images to our community and his family through exhibition\, digital prints\, and most importantly through our song\, dance\, and ceremony. The most recent develops in this research is the possible rematriation–returning back to our matrilineal community–of totem poles that are currently in museums in Geneva Switzerland and Washington\, DC on the basis of B.A.’s photographs. \nThis event is open to the public\, all students\, staff and faculty with an interest in Native American art\, history and activism. \nMore information: https://diversity.ucdavis.edu/events/photo-repatriation-totem-pole-rematriation-0

SUMMARY:Davis Cherry Blossom Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Davis Cherry Blossom Festival is a grassroots public event hosted in Davis\, California started by students and young taiko players to celebrate Asian American joy\, culture\, and belonging. Each year\, local artists\, taiko groups\, and thousands of visitors come together to dance along to live music\, eat delicious food\, participate in fun cultural activities\, and raise money for organizations doing meaningful social and environmental justice work. \n  \nAmidst the rise in violence directed at Asian Americans over the years\, and in the wake of the racialized murders of Asian women in Georgia on March 16\, 2021\, the Davis Cherry Blossom Festival team expresses grief and calls for all members of our community to help bring about awareness and change. \n  \nIn the past years\, Asian American communities have witnessed a rise in violence and harassment and have spoken out about it. For the past century\, Asian Americans have known this type of violence and trauma intimately. There is a deep history and context to the way “casual racism” and violence have been linked\, and that history is intertwined in our lives.

SUMMARY:UC Davis 49th Annual Powwow
DESCRIPTION:This year’s UC Davis Powwow will be on April 13 from 11 am  -8 pm at the UC Davis Quad. \nAbout\nPowwow\, as practiced today\, is a social gathering intended to provide the campus and local community a space to learn about\, engage with\, and celebrate the traditions and cultures of Indigenous peoples\, and bring visibility to the vibrancy of Native American music\, dance\, and arts. Held in 1969\, the first UC Davis Powwow was hosted in conjunction with the creation of the Native American Studies Department and has since been the culminating event for the Native American Culture Days events and programs. The UC Davis Powwow is student-run and student-planned\, standing as one of the longest running student powwows in California. \nThose who serve on the UC Davis Powwow Committee are able to maintain their roots and build a stronger connection to their Indigenous identities\, while navigating a Western educational institution. The annual event has gained national recognition for hosting vendors\, dancers\, judges\, head staff\, drum groups\, and attendees from both California and all throughout Indian Country. The UC Davis Powwow also benefits the campus community by promoting cross-cultural communication and alliances and supporting both the recruitment and retention of Native American students at UC Davis. Altogether\, everything put into preparing and holding the annual UC Davis Powwow affords the opportunity for the campus and local Native community to build connections to address the social\, cultural\, historical and political issues facing Indigenous people today. \nMore information at: https://ccc.ucdavis.edu/programs-and-services/culture-days/powwow.
