SUMMARY:Arab American Histories: Queer Explorations of Power and Difference in an Era of Repression
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the UC Davis Middle East/South Asia Studies\, the Department of History and the California History-Social Science Project \nReception at 5 p.m. and scholar talk and conversation from 5:30-7 p.m. \nCharlotte Karem Albrecht from the University of Michigan will present her research in gender and sexuality in Arab American immigration history and lead a conversation on the challenges and significance of ethnic studies scholarship in out current moment. \nThis talk explores Arab American immigration history\, illustrating how Arab immigrants have been variably\npositioned as incorporable into the U.S. body politic or as threats to the state. Drawing on her book\, Possible\nHistories\, Karem Albrecht examines the history of Syrian peddling to show how ideas about sexuality and gender formed the basis of Arab Americans’ indeterminate racial status. Syrians came to the U.S. as early as the 1870s and worked as peddlers\, enabling them to acquire wealth quickly and transforming the Syrian American family. At the height of this profession’s popularity\, transient labor was associated with sexual non-normativity\, and with homosexuality specifically. Karem Albrecht uses queer affective and grounded imaginative approaches to history to show how immigrant peddlers and their networks of labor and care appeared in interconnected discourses about American modernity\, sexuality\, gender\, class\, and race. The conversation will feature reflections on teaching Arab American history in a moment when ethnic studies\, queer studies\, and academic inquiry are under threat. \nThis event is the third in The Middle East in Historical Context speaker series\, organized and sponsored by the Department of History\, the Middle East/South Asia Studies Program\, and the California History Social-Science Project at UC Davis. Karem Albrecht’s talk is also part of a month-long commemoration of Arab American Heritage Month at UC Davis. \nOpen to campus and community.

Held in 1969\, the first UC Davis Powwow was hosted in conjunction with the creation of the Native American Studies Department and has since been the culminating event for the Native American Culture Days events and programs. Staff from Imagining America: Artists and Scholars in Public Life will facilitate the event using the powerful story circles methodology created by artist John O’Neal from the Free Southern Theater. Using a prompt and a few simple guidelines\, story circles allow us to listen to each other’s stories in small groups and discuss our common and different experiences and lives. \nPrompt: Tell us about a time when you felt supported and held by others during a difficult time in your life. Or tell us about a time when you did not feel supported when you needed it\, and how that experience changed how you support yourself or others. \nBy sharing stories of when we felt supported in community\, we can build a greater understanding of what we can do to help each other\, and how we can create practices to support each other during difficult times. \nThis event is open to everyone. DESCRIPTION:The City of Davis invites community members to submit nominations now through April 15\, 2025\, for the annual Golden Heart Awards. These awards recognize exceptional youth in the Davis community \nNominations can be submitted in two different categories to help acknowledge youth who are “non-traditional achievers”: \n\nThe Service Award: Recognizing individuals who have given significant service to an expressed need in the community\, to their peers and/or to their schools\nThe Personal Challenge Award: Recognizing individuals who have overcome significant challenges in their lives.\n\nIn memory of Andrew Mockus\, who was tragically killed in 1992\, the City Council adopted the Recreation and Park Commission recommendation to create the Golden Heart Awards as a way to recognize outstanding youth in the community\, especially those students who are not typically recognized in other forums. DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Campus Community Book Project (DEI | OCCR) \nThe Interprofessional Book Club at UC Davis Health returns for the 2024-2025 Campus Community Book Project. Jann Murray-García\, clinical professor emerita\, leads this year’s sessions. Everyone is welcome — students\, faculty\, staff and community members. This event is virtual. For more information click here. \nArline T. Geronimus coined the term “weathering” to describe the effects of systemic oppression—including racism and classism—on the body. In “Weathering: The Extraordinary Stress of Ordinary Life in an Unjust Society\,” based on more than 30 years of research\, she argues that health and aging have more to do with how society treats us than how well we take care of ourselves. She explains what happens to human bodies as they attempt to withstand and overcome societal challenges and details how that ravages our health. And she proposes solutions. Session 3 covers pages 229-313. \nIn 2024-2025\, the UC Davis Campus Community Book Project will be reading “Weathering: The Extraordinary Stress of Ordinary Life in an Unjust Society” by Arline Geronimus and will feature a year-long program on the theme of health equity and justice. Arline Geronimus is a professor in the School of Public Health and a research professor at the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan\, where she also is affiliated with the Center for Research on Ethnicity\, Culture and Health. She is an elected member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies of Science. Fusing science and social justice\, Dr. Geronimus’ scholarship explores how systemic injustice erodes the health of marginalized people. Until now\, there has been little discussion about the insidious effects of social injustice on the body. “Weathering” shifts the paradigm\, shining a light on the topic and offering a roadmap for hope.

DESCRIPTION:The Aoki Center and UC Davis Hispanic Serving Institution Speaker Series Presents Professor Yianella Blanco\, UC Davis School of Education \n\nDr. Yianella Blanco is an assistant professor in the School of Education. Her research focuses on the teaching and learning of Latinx histories and experiences in K-12 schools\, especially those of Central America(ns). She graduated from Teachers College\, Columbia University in 2022 with a PhD in Social Studies education. Prior to that\, she worked as a high school social studies and special education teacher in New York City. Her work with young people inspires her research and sustains her spirit as she continues to search for liberatory and humanizing educational practices. \nThis talk is drawn from a larger qualitative research study with Central American-American educators\, during which they shared their own testimonios and collectively read the testimonios written by Central American migrant youth to imagine how we might use testimonios in our teaching practice. Our research is grounded in LatCrit theory\, and builds upon testimonio research that has uplifted the histories and experiences of Latinx youth. We add to this research by putting it in conversation with healing-centered pedagogy (Ginwright\, 2015; 2018). Ultimately\, we argue that testimonios can aid in dismantling oppressive narratives and build new ones focused on Latinx youths’ joy\, strengths\, and successes. DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Campus Community Book Project (DEI | OCCR) \nNadine Burke Harris is a pediatrician and the author of The Deepest Well: Healing the Long-Term Effects of Childhood Trauma and Adversity. Her 2014 TED Talk “explains that the repeated stress of abuse\, neglect and parents struggling with mental health or substance abuse issues has real\, tangible effects on the development of the brain. This unfolds across a lifetime\, to the point where those who’ve experienced high levels of trauma are at triple the risk for heart disease and lung cancer. SUMMARY:Adult Mental Health First Aid
DESCRIPTION:This free training is open to Yolo County staff\, provider staff and the community. Mental Health First Aid teaches you how to identify\, understand and respond to signs of mental health and substance use challenges. The training will also cover how to interact with a person in crisis and connect the person with help. \nAttendees must complete a two-hour independent online learning module prior to the class and are expected to attend the live training for the full duration.
