SUMMARY:Golden Heart Awards Nominations
DESCRIPTION:The City of Davis invites community members to submit nominations now through April 15\, 2025\, for the annual Golden Heart Awards. These awards recognize exceptional youth in the Davis community \nNominations can be submitted in two different categories to help acknowledge youth who are “non-traditional achievers”: \n\nThe Service Award: Recognizing individuals who have given significant service to an expressed need in the community\, to their peers and/or to their schools\nThe Personal Challenge Award: Recognizing individuals who have overcome significant challenges in their lives.\n\nIn memory of Andrew Mockus\, who was tragically killed in 1992\, the City Council adopted the Recreation and Park Commission recommendation to create the Golden Heart Awards as a way to recognize outstanding youth in the community\, especially those students who are not typically recognized in other forums. The first award was presented in 1994. \n“Being resilient in challenging circumstances is never easy\,” said Mayor Bapu Vaitla. “Through the Golden Heart Award program\, the City Council honors the outstanding accomplishments of Davis youth who have sacrificed to focus on community service and those who have overcome considerable challenges in their lives.” \nNomination forms For the Golden Heart Awards are available at: https://www.cityofdavis.org/goldenheartaward. Community members are welcome to nominate a deserving Davis youth who is currently in the seventh through twelfth grades. Youth cannot nominate themselves nor can a parent/guardian nominate their youth. \nNomination forms are due no later than 5 p.m. on Tuesday\, April 15\, 2025\, and must be submitted in one of the following ways: \n\nBy email to Kellie Vitaich at: kvitaich@cityofdavis.org \nBy mail to: City of Davis\, Golden Heart Awards – ATTN: Kellie Vitaich\, 23 Russell Blvd.\, Davis\, CA 95616\nIn person at: the Parks and Community Services Public Counter\, located at City Hall (23 Russell Blvd)\n\nAwards and recognition will be presented at the May 20 City Council meeting. SUMMARY:Story Circles for Community Connection
DESCRIPTION:This community listening and sharing event provides a space to build empathy and connection by coming together to tell our stories and learn from one another. Staff from Imagining America: Artists and Scholars in Public Life will facilitate the event using the powerful story circles methodology created by artist John O’Neal from the Free Southern Theater. Using a prompt and a few simple guidelines\, story circles allow us to listen to each other’s stories in small groups and discuss our common and different experiences and lives. \nPrompt: Tell us about a time when you felt supported and held by others during a difficult time in your life. Or tell us about a time when you did not feel supported when you needed it\, and how that experience changed how you support yourself or others. \nBy sharing stories of when we felt supported in community\, we can build a greater understanding of what we can do to help each other\, and how we can create practices to support each other during difficult times. \nThis event is open to everyone. Bring yourself\, a friend\, and a story to share! You do not need to prepare a story in advance but do come prepared to fully listen and be moved by the narratives of your neighbors. IA will provide instructions and share resources on Story Circles so anyone can learn to use this tool and practice in their own lives and communities. \nRSVP HERE \nAbout Imagining America: Based at the University of California\, Davis\, the Imagining America national consortium brings together scholars\, artists\, designers\, humanists\, and organizers to imagine\, study\, and enact a more just and liberatory ‘America’ and world. Working across institutional\, disciplinary\, and community divides\, IA strengthens and promotes public scholarship\, cultural organizing\, and campus change that inspires collective imagination\, knowledge-making\, and civic action on pressing public issues. \nAbout International House\, Davis: I-House is an international culture center dedicated to nurturing the exchange of arts\, culture and ideas to build a culturally vibrant\, globally connected and inclusive community. People from all over the world come together in our beloved gathering space to celebrate our common humanity\, share cultural practices and traditions\, engage with our differences\, cultivate joy\, combat isolation\, and foster civic dialogue. At I-House\, we believe that culture\, community\, and fellowship are the lifeblood of a healthy and vibrant city\, region\, and society.
